Super Bowl XLV has just ended but the NFL lines @ BetUs are already posted. The New York Giants are a 23-to-1 underdog to win Super Bowl XLVI.
Realistically, though, team followers now that the team isn’t actually that far off.
For the Giants, their 2010 season can be summed up in about eight minutes of football in a late December game versus the Philadelphia Eagles: coughing up turnovers, giving up big plays on defense and poor special teams.
While those three facets were highlighted in the Eagles epic comeback, it was really a culmination of things throughout the season. The Giants led the league with 42 turnovers this past season and one way to improve rapidly is to cut those out of the diet.
To contrast, the Giants only had 13 turnovers in their Super Bowl winning campaign in 2008.
As far as the big plays on defense go – the whopping 42 passing plays allowed of 20 yards or longer – the Giants have to shore that up in-house. They signed Antrel Rolle last offseason and drafted Kenny Phillips a few years before that. Nobody would be angry if the Giants drafted a cornerback in the first round of the NFL Draft, but they do have the personnel in-house to get the job done.
Lastly, special teams must improve as well. Whether the Giants keep the much-maligned Matt Dodge as a starter or bring in some competition – they should bring in competition as his net average was 30th in the NFL – they need to improve this realm.
If the Giants can correct those three areas, they’ll be in good shape to compete for the NFC East – and NFC title overall – next season.
