Robert Douglas could get his big chance for the New York Giants

Robert Douglas didn’t play as a rookie last season for the Giants but he will likely be the starting fullback this season.  He is 6’1″, 230 pounds which means he will be smaller than the guy he’s blocking for as Brandon Jacobs is a big guy.

The New York Giants turn to Lester Tynes to replace Jay Feely

The Giants won’t lose much in turning to Lester Tynes this season.  He made 77.4% of his field goals last season and he was 35 of 36 on extra points finishing with 107 points.  Tynes made 15 of 17 field goals of 39 yards or less last season and he was 9 of 14 on kicks of 40+ yards.

Tynes has now played in 48 career NFL games and he has scored 341 points which gives him an average of 7.1 points per game.  Tynes has now made 68 of 87 (78.2%) of his field goal attempts and 137 of 141 extra points.

The New York Giants will have a new look at running back in 2007

The Giants have lost Tiki Barber to retirement and they are turning over the running game to Brandon Jacobs and Reuben Droughns.  The Giants desperately want Brandon Jacobs to step up and be the main man and I think he will be really good.  Jacobs will have to do a little better job not taking big hits and that might be a problem because of his running style.  He runs upright but he is really big (6’4″, 264 pounds) and likes to attempt to run over defenders which also leaves him open to taking a big hit.  Jacobs played in 15 games (0 starts) last season for the Giants and he carried the ball 96 times for 423 yards (4.4 ypc) with 9 TD runs.  He also caught 11 passes for 149 yards (13.5 avg).  Jacobs game has been a little raw so far but that could be because the Giants have only played him in short yardage situations usually with extra defenders in the box.  I think he will excel against defenses that have to play him honest.  Jacobs has now played in 31 games (0 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 134 times for 522 yards (3.9 ypc) with 16 TD runs.  He also has caught 11 passes for 149 yards (13.5 avg).  Look for Jacobs to have a huge breakout season as the feature back of the Giants in 2007.

The Giants traded backup WR Tim Carter to the Browns for running back Reuben Droughns in the off-season and he will be Jacobs’ main backup.  He played in 14 games (12 starts) last season for the Cleveland Browns and he carried the ball 220 times for 758 yards (3.4 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 27 passes for 169 yards (6.3 avg).  Droughns was basically a fullback early in his career before switching to halfback his last three seasons.  He has now played in 86 games (50 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 844 times for 3,327 yards (3.9 ypc) with 13 TD runs.  He also has caught 116 passes for 940 yards (8.1 avg) with 6 TD grabs.  Droughns will be a good backup for the Giants in 2007.

Rookie Ahmad Bradshaw will have a good shot of making the team as the #3 running back on the Giants despite getting picked so late in the draft.  Don’t expect Bradshaw to get many carries behind Jacobs and Droughns.
