The New York Giants re-sign C Gary Ruegamer

The Giants have given Ruegamer a new 2-year contract.  He played in all 16 games last season (1 start) and he’s played in 92 games (17 starts) over his NFL career.  The 6′4″, 299 pound Ruegamer is a good reserve player that can also handle playing guard when the Giants need him to.

The New York Giants sign linebacker Kawika Mitchell

The Giants have signed Kawika Mitchell to a 1-year, $1 million dollar contract.  Mitchell started all 16 games for the Kansas City Chiefs and he made 104 tackles, had 1.5 sacks, 1 interception, 1 pass defensed and a fumble recovery.  Last season was Mitchell’s second consecutive season with 100+ tackles so this was a great signing for the Giants.

The New York Giants re-sign Darius Watts

The Giants re-signed Darius Watts to a 1-year contract and will give him another chance to do something.  He did not play a down last season for the Giants but they figured that they needed to find a replacement for Tim Carter who they traded to the Browns.  They must have figured that at least Watts already knows the playbook.  Over his career he has played in 22 games (2 starts) and he has caught 33 passes for 407 yards (12.3 avg) with 1 TD.  Don’t expect miracles from him in 2007.

The Giants acquire RB Reuben Droughns from the Cleveland Browns for WR Tim Carter

The Giants moved quickly to get a running back to share the carries with Brandon Jacobs in 2007 and all it cost them was Tim Carter.  Reuben Droughns had a rough season for the Browns in 2006, but he’s a decent back.  He played in 14 games for the Browns last season (12 starts) and he carried the ball 220 times for 758 yards (3.4 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 27 passes for 169 yards (6.3 avg).  Droughns doesn’t have much speed but he is a powerful runner that rushed for over 1,200 yards in both 2004 with the Broncos and 2005 with the Browns.  Still, look for Jacobs to win out as the main back for the Giants in 2007 with Droughns getting a lot of work as the back up.

Tim Carter wasn’t much of a loss for the Giants as he always seemed hurt.  He played in 16 games for the Giants last season (8 starts) and he caught 22 passes for 253 yards (11.5 avg) with 2 TD grabs.

The Giants re-sign starting center Shaun O’Hara to a 5 year contract

The Giants made a great move and signed Shaun O’Hara to a five year $19 million dollar contract.  O’Hara was the top rated center to be available in free agency so the Giants acted quickly.  O’Hara started 15 games last season for the Giants and he’s started 43 games in his three years with the Giants.
