Giants defensive ends still the heart of the defense

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Tuesday 17 October 2006 at 5:03 pm

Michael Strahan might be getting up there in years and he does only have 1 sack so far this season.  Strahan is playing very well against the run this season and has 23 tackles so far.  The other end is Osi Umenyiora, who has 15 tackles and 4 sacks this season.  Umenyiora dominated the Falcons in the last game, due to his great burst off the line.  He will be a star for quite a long time in this league.

Giants beat Falcons at their own game 27-14

The Giants were actually down 14-3 in this game, but then the light came on for the Giants.  They just tightened their chinstraps and took the fight to the Falcons, who couldn’t respond.  Eli Manning completed 17 of 30 passes for 180 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INT.  RB Tiki Barber had another fantastic football game.  Barber carrried the ball 26 times for 185 yards (7.1 ypc) and he caught 3 passes for 42 yards.  RB Brandon Jacobs got his yards too, carrying the ball 11 times for 53 yards (4.8 ypc) and a TD.  TE Jeremy Shockey had a great game catching 6 passes for 55 yards and 2 TDs.  Plaxico Burress added 4 catches for 44 yards.

The Giants defense played good against the pass after they got the lead in the game.  The Falcons still gashed the Giants defense for 223 yards rushing on 26 carries (8.6 ypc)!  The Giants held the Falcons to 106 net yards passing on 14 of 27 completions.  DT Barry Cofield had 4 tackles and 1.5 sacks.  LB Brandon Short had 5 tackles and 2 sacks.  DE Osi Umenyiora had 3 tackles and 2 sacks.  CB Sam Madison was very active with 2 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 pass defensed and an interception.

This was a huge road win for the Giants.

Giants vs. Falcons

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Thursday 12 October 2006 at 1:50 pm

This should be an interesting football game.  The high-powered New York Giants offense (396.3 yards per game, 25.0 points per game) vs.the stingy Falcons defense that only allows 10.5 points per game and 269.8 yards per game.

The Giants need to get off to a fast start offensively in this game.  If they build a quick lead against the Falcons, it will take the Falcons out of their running offense.  Eli Manning will have to be careful against the Falcons secondary because they haven’t allowed a TD pass this season and have picked off 6 passes already.  Don’t expect the Giants to change how they attack a defense just because the Falcons have a good one.  Tiki Barber will give the Falcons front 7 fits chasing him around the field.  Barber has 348 yards rushing and 148 yards receiving in four games.  The Giants also like to change up a little during the game and let Brandon Jacobs hammer at the other teams defense for awhile.  Jacobs is a huge back that has rushed for 124 yards and 5.4 yards per carry so far this season.

The Falcons will try to do what they do best…..run the football.  The Falcons are averaging 234.3 yards rushing per game and 6.1 yards per carry.  The Giants defense will offer stiff resistence to the Falcons as they only allow 86.5 yards rushing per game and 3.0 yards per carry.   Warrick Dunn (365 yards), Michael Vick (333 yards rushing) and Jerious Norwood (217 yards rushing) will spread the carries around to keep everyone fresh.  It is imperative that the Falcons are successful running the ball because they only average 116.0 yards passing per game, and they are not built to be able to come from behind.  That showed against the New Orleans Saints.

The early part of this game will determine who wins it.  If the Giants get a quick lead and force the Falcons to throw more than they want to…..the Giants will win.  If the Falcons get the lead by running the ball effectively, they will try to grind out the clock and probably win.  Either way, this should be a good football game.

Giants special teams have room for improvement

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Wednesday 11 October 2006 at 2:09 pm

The Giants special teams are better than how they’ve played so far this season.  The Giants have allowed 10.0 yards per punt return and 21.8 yards per kick-off return.

Jay Feely is 6 of 8 on FGs and has hit all 10 XPTs.  Punter Jeff Feagles is doing a good job this season.  Feagles is averaging 44.1 yards per punt and 39.4 net yards per punt.  Feagles has placed 33.3% of his punts inside the opposing 20 yard line.

Chad Morton is the punt and kick-off returner for the Giants, and he’s a good one.  Morton is averaging 7.3 yards per punt return and 23.3 yards per kick-off return.

Giants abuse Redskins 19-3

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Monday 9 October 2006 at 3:17 pm

The Giants came out of their bye week breathing fire and took it all out on the Redskins.  Eli Manning completed 23 of 33 passes for 256 yards and a TD.  Tiki Barber had a great game, carrying the ball 23 times for 123 yards (5.3 ypc).  Brandon Jacobs carried the ball 9 times for 26 yards (2.9 ypc).  Amani Toomer caught 4 passes for 81 yards and Plaxico Burress caught 7 passes for 69 yards and a TD.

The Giants played great team defense as everyone was flying to the football.  The Giants held the Redskins to 78 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.9 ypc).  The Redskins only completed 12 of 22 passes for 86 net yards passing.

A fantastic effort by the Giants, who will need another good effort next week to beat the Falcons.

Giants vs. Redskins

Blogged under Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Thursday 5 October 2006 at 8:49 am

The Redskins have exploded since Clinton Portis has returned full-time to the offense, and the Giants are well-rested coming off their bye week.

Look for the Redskins to run the football at the start of the game into the teeth of the Giants defense that only allows 89.3 yards rushing per game and 2.9 yards per carry.  Clinton Portis (237 yards rushing) and Ledell Betts (223 yards rushing) will try to establish themselves so that Mark Brunell (950 yards passing) can run play-action passes, which he is a master at.  WR Santana Moss (17 rec, 326 yards) should be able to find running room in the Giants secondary as long as the line keeps Umenyiora and Strahan out of their backfield.

The Giants like to throw the ball alot, but Tiki Barber (225 yards rushing) and Brandon Jacobs (98 yards rushing) will try to force their will on the Redskins Front 7.  The Redskins also have a rugged run defense, allowing only 79.5 yards rushing per game and 3.2 yards per carry.  The Giants have been very good at protecting Eli Manning (893 yards passing) as he has only been sacked 2 times this season.  Manning needs to be smart with the ball, because he should have success throwing the ball against the Skins who allow 231.5 yards passing per game.  Manning likes to spread the ball around to his Top 4, Toomer (20 rec, 207 yards), Tiki Barber (16 rec, 132 yards), Plaxico Burress (11 rec, 217 yards) and Jeremy Shockey (11 rec, 134 yards).

This should be a great football game that both teams need.  The team that wants it more will win this game

Carlos Emmons out

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by ravenhater on Wednesday 4 October 2006 at 12:25 am

Carlos Emmons will miss at least two weeks due to injury.  Gerris Wilkerson will start against the Redskins and will have his work cut out for him chasing Clinton Portis and Ledell Betts around.

Giants need Eli Manning to protect the football

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by ravenhater on Tuesday 3 October 2006 at 7:41 pm

Eli Manning needs to make quicker and better decisions with the football.  Manning has already been sacked 9 times and thrown 5 pick-offs.  Both of those numbers need to come down to make the Giants the explosive offensive team that they should be.  Manning has completed 75 of 113 passes (66.4%) for 893 yards with 8 TDs and 5 INT.  Manning has a QB rating of 95.5, but it’s a little deceiving as he had a great 4th quarter against the Seahawks after they were down 42-3 after three quarters.
